ach dial offers a different execution of a tri-compax chronograph, blending classic and contemporary elements as only Farer knows how. Through the use of bold colours and a variety of finishes and textures, such as sunray surfaces and engine turning, every watch in the collection is filled with small details that make it instantly recognisable as a Farer chronograph. Which, in turn, guarantees that each dial is sure to turn heads whilst retaining the exceptional legibility required of a racing chronograph.
As befits a racing chronograph, the steel case is an elegant blend of sleek curves and flowing lines, with the standout feature being its distinctive concave “ski-slope” lugs. The second key element is the bidirectional bezel with a ceramic insert. The insert features a twelve-hour scale so that you can track a second time zone, and these markings are lumed so that they can be easily read in the dark. With a diameter of 38.5mm and a thickness of only 13.4mm (including the crystal), these sit comfortably on the wrist and make for ideal racing companions.
Through the flat sapphire crystal case back, you’ll see a Swiss-made Sellita SW510M b Elaboré grade movement. This hand-wound calibre features exquisite Top Grade decoration, with skeleton framework, perlage finishing, and blued screws, as well as an intricately customised bridge with an engraved Farer monogram chequered sports pattern. As for performance, the SW510 has an impressive 63-hour power reserve and 23 jewels. Beating at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour, it’s a movement built for today’s demanding use.
The Libre is a bold take on the “big-eye” chronograph, so named because the chronograph’s minute counter is larger than the other sub-dials. Rich burgundy elements punctuate the textured white dial, with the minute sub-dial segmented into thirds, each a slightly different hue. The applied hour batons have a burgundy PVD coating, and the tapered handset is painted a gloss burgundy as well. Both are filled with BGW9 Super-LumiNova that ensures the watch is readable 24/7. The last burgundy element that ties the design together is the burgundy dial print and minute track.
Contrasting against this dominant burgundy and while colour palette, both the chronograph seconds and minute hands are in sky blue. This sparse use of a tertiary colour allows you to pick out the hands with ease. This two-tone colour scheme offers stark contrast and excellent legibility, whilst simultaneously evoking the punchy colours seen in classic motorsports.
The watch is named after Formula Libre, a type of automobile racing that allows cars of a range of types, ages, and makes to compete together. It’s a classification that dates back to the late 1920s, when the strict rules that governed Grand Prix racing were abandoned.
The Gara makes careful use of one of the most iconic colours in motorsport - British Racing Green. It’s the colour of the three chronograph sub-dials, which have an engine-turned finish and white print. The bold trio cuts through the silver sunburst dial and pairs perfectly with the green ceramic insert of the bidirectional rotating bezel. The faceted hour markers that are applied to the dial are tapered towards its centre and have a strong application of BGW9 Super-LumiNova. They’re paired with a tapered handset that’s painted a glossy British Racing Green and also filled with lume.
Pops of burnt orange on the minute track and running seconds hand cut through the green and silver, and a mustard yellow chronograph seconds hand further breaks up the two-tone colour scheme. The result is a watch with simple elegance, yet whose bold green elements make it a standout watch on the wrist.
Gara is Italian for “race” or “competition”, and so it makes for a fitting name for a racing chronograph designed to be worn during motorsport competitions. It conjures memories of watching the Italian Grand Prix in the September sun.
The dial of the Volante is inspired by our best-selling Cobb Monopusher GMT. Its radiant sky-blue sunburst dial is punctuated by engine-turned cream sub-dials that perfectly complement the blue hues. Applied to this dial are polished faceted markers that taper towards the dial’s centre. They’re filled with BGW9 Super-LumiNova, as are the hands, which are tapered and a glossy navy blue. Meanwhile, the chronograph seconds hand is a bright orange that bursts out of the dial, whilst the running seconds hand is a subtle sky blue to match the dial with an orange tip.
The dial is framed by a bidirectional bezel whose navy blue insert features a luminous 12-hour scale that lets you track a second time zone. Thanks to such a considered colour scheme, the Volante is both playful and versatile, being a watch that can be dressed up or down to suit your needs.
Volante is the Italian word for steering wheel. Derived from the verb volare (to fly), the word literally means “flying.” It’s an apt choice that, in motorsport, evokes imagery of classic racing cars speeding round a track.
