Hanhart Thermosphere – Against the Clock

With the Thermosphere Limited Edition, Hanhart presents a special model limited to 112 pieces, inspired by the breathing apparatus monitoring procedures used by fire services. Developed in collaboration with the Baden-Württemberg State Firefighters Association, the watch transfers key time markers of a breathing apparatus deployment onto its rotating bezel. In doing so, the model combines a rugged operational aesthetic with a clear and functional concept.

T

he new special edition is based on Hanhart’s Aquasphere series, whose fundamental architecture has been further developed to meet the specific requirements of firefighting personnel. While the Aquasphere was designed to provide orientation underwater, the Thermosphere draws its inspiration from operations characterized by heat, smoke, and limited visibility. Its name references the Ancient Greek word thermós, meaning “heat,” one of the defining elements of firefighting operations.

Reduced to the essentials and clearly mission-focused, the Thermosphere places functionality and durability at its core. It was developed for situations in which technical reliability is not merely desirable but an absolute necessity.

Limited to 112 pieces, the edition size pays tribute to the European emergency number for fire and rescue services.

When the smoke thickens and visibility is reduced to just a few centimeters, only one constant remains: time. In firefighting breathing apparatus operations, time determines orientation, physical strain, and ultimately the safety of the firefighters involved.

In dense smoke, zero-visibility conditions, and under extreme physical stress, the surrounding environment loses its contours, and the available breathing air becomes the decisive measure guiding every action. Each operation follows an invisible structure shaped by the limited duration of the air supply cylinders and the clearly defined checkpoints of breathing apparatus monitoring. It was from this operational reality that the idea for the Thermosphere was born. The watch is closely connected to the experiences of the Baden-Württemberg fire service and to the men and women who take responsibility for these operations every day.

The conceptual idea behind the watch was significantly shaped by two experienced fire service leaders: Stefan Hermann, Fire Chief of the Reutlingen Fire Department and a longstanding expert in incident command and disaster management, and Ralf Heizmann, Fire Chief of the Volunteer Fire Department of Vöhrenbach and Deputy District Fire Inspector for the Black Forest district. Completing the trio is Simon Hall, CEO of Hanhart, who has himself been actively involved in the fire service for many years.

“The creation of the Thermosphere was something truly special to me because it combines a cause that is close to my heart with my passion for genuine tool watches. When my dedication to the fire service and my professional role come together in this way, the result is a product with a unique sense of authenticity.” - Simon Hall, CEO Hanhart

The Thermosphere is designed around a clear and intuitive visual representation of time. At its core is the rotating bezel featuring distinctive triangular luminous markers. These are based on the time checkpoints used in breathing apparatus monitoring and enable quick and intuitive time tracking. The prominently highlighted minute hand further supports this function, allowing for rapid orientation even in poor visibility conditions.

When a breathing apparatus operation begins, the solid triangle on the bezel is aligned with the position of the minute hand. The maximum operational duration, determined by the available air supply, can then be read directly from the bezel. Typically, this corresponds to 30 minutes when using a single air cylinder and 60 minutes when using a twin-cylinder configuration. The different marker symbols indicate both total operational time and intermediate checkpoints. Thanks to the use of Super-LumiNova on the bezel, hands, and dial, these references remain clearly visible even in complete darkness.

The watch’s high-contrast color scheme draws inspiration from the visual language of the fire service. Yellow, blue, and red accents give the Thermosphere its distinctive appearance while simultaneously enhancing legibility and orientation.

The emblem of the Baden-Württemberg Firefighters Association visibly connects the watch to its origins and appears on both the dial and the case back. The number “112,” the European emergency telephone number, is represented at the 12 o’clock position. To emphasize its dual significance, the “1” is visually highlighted from the “12” through a contrasting color.

For maximum practicality in both everyday wear and operational use, the Thermosphere is equipped with a Hookstrap™ textile strap that can be easily adjusted. Its elastic construction allows for quick donning and makes it suitable for wear over protective clothing. Alternatively, the watch is also available with a stainless-steel bracelet or a rubber strap. Scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and water resistance to 30 bar (approximately 300 meters / 1,000 feet) make the Thermosphere a dependable companion both on duty and in everyday life.

Hanhart’s standard for rate accuracy is as distinctive as the watches themselves. Every single movement is tested and regulated by highly skilled watchmakers at the Hanhart manufactory in Gütenbach. Hanhart’s specifications for accuracy range from 0 to +8 seconds per day, averaged over six positions. This corresponds to the same overall deviation as plus/minus four seconds, with the difference that Hanhart does not allow any negative deviation in the main positions. Additionally, a maximum delta of ten seconds between positions is permitted. The German virtue of punctuality demands that Hanhart wearers should never be late due to their timepiece.

As a pioneer in the development of wrist chronographs and stopwatches, Hanhart has played an outstanding role in the history of the German watch industry. Driven by a passion for technical innovation, Hanhart continues to set the highest standards, guided by the principles of precision and reliability, perfect legibility, simple and safe operation, and maximum robustness. Since 1882, the manufactory in Gütenbach in the Black Forest has been creating timepieces that combine technical perfection with unmistakable design.
