hey say you should let sleeping d0gs lie, but in the pursuit of constant improvement, Studio Underd0g has revisited the 02Series field watch for its second generation. Originally launched in 2023, Studio Underd0g’s difficult second album drew on a theoretical 1945 MoD brief, the same lineage that gave us the iconic Dirty Dozen field watches.

The 02Series introduced the first Swiss calibre into the Studio Underd0g collection, alongside a brand new concept: a multi-layer dial made from a piece of sapphire atop a base featuring seven layers of custom-made Super-LumiNova pigment. Who needs a night light? Now, the 02Series (Gen2) brings a reduction in thickness to 11.5mm, as well as a power reserve up from 42 hours to 63 hours, all while maintaining 100m of water-resistance.

This update also presented an opportunity to tweak the original design, and add two new colourways, Nightshade and Red L0lly.

“The 02Series has done more to define Studio Underd0g than perhaps any other watch in our collection. It was the difficult second album that the enthusiast community adopted more quickly than we expected. The multi-layer dial took years of development and problem-solving to get right, and having featured on The Alliance 02 with Christopher Ward and our Fears collaborations, it’s become something of a signature for us. As we approach the three year mark for this series, Gen2 feels like the right moment to take everything that made the original resonate and push it one step further.”

With this new generation comes two new colourways, Nightshade and Red L0lly. The deep purple and cherry red hues have been achieved by tinting the 1mm thick sapphire crystal suspended on the upper part of the multi-layer dial, with the sunburst effect etched into the metallic layer beneath.

This technique first debuted on The Manhattan collaboration with Fears, and replaces the lume on the original 02Series design for a show of bright lights and colour. Night-time visibility is provided by luminous markers for these two colourways.

Nobody’s nerfect, and that’s why a few subtle design improvements have been rolled out across the 02Series (Gen2) to make the crystal clear field watch display even more impeccable. A reduction of the minute track inwards improves legibility within the domed sapphire crystal. The corresponding dial text has been rebalanced to accommodate, as has the handset, which has been completely retooled. Dial text overall has been reduced in volume for a cleaner appearance, with priority given to Studio Underd0g’s dedication to assembly within The D0ghouse, located in Great Britain. These are understated differences that make all the difference.

Increased refinement in the design of the 02Series for the Gen2 has allowed for more compact packaging within the dial and hand construction. The reduced minute track and shorter hands allows the domed crystal to be brought closer to the dial surface, not to mention the tighter tolerances made possible by the introduction of Studio Underd0g’s in-house watchmaking workshop, The D0ghouse. The 02Series now measures in at a trim 11.5mm.

Swiss movement manufacturer Sellita has updated the SW210 found in the 02Series to the SW200-2 M Power+, and that means the power reserve has been increased by a useful 21 hours to 63 total. Now it will last comfortably through the weekend on a full wind, which is especially handy since 02Series watches are manually wound in the tradition of the classic field watch. The risk of repetitive strain injury has been reduced by 50%.

With the addition of a pair of new colourways comes the departure of two originals, Full Mo0n and Midnight.

The case back Jellyfish motif denoting the 100m water-resistance is now set against a high contrast matte background to give those stingers more zing. An updated suite of straps from The Strap Tailor is also new for Gen2, with the Pink Lem0nade set against a Coffee Bean washed suede, the Steffany Blue a Midnight washed suede, the Red L0lly a Black Pueblo with cream minimal stitch detail and the Nightshade a Burgundy Gaucho also with cream minimal stitch detail.
