Mauron Musy MU05 nO-Ring Origin

Mauron Musy MU05 nO-Ring Origin

This latest release marks ten years of nO-Ring®, thirteen years of Mauron Musy, and twenty-six watches carrying the calculations that started it all.

M

auron Musy was founded in 2013 with a single ambition: to rethink mechanical watchmaking through engineering. Three years later, in 2016, that ambition took its clearest form yet in the brand’s patented nO-Ring® technology.

The problem its founders set out to solve more than a decade ago was a challenge left behind by the whole industry. A mechanical watch runs by the precise choreography of dozens of tiny components designed to keep time for decades, yet the industry’s standard way of protecting that movement from water remains rubber gaskets. A remarkable mechanism, guarded by a consumable, that never quite made sense to Christophe Musy and Eric Mauron.

So they questioned it, considered the challenge, thought it through, and went looking for something different. What they found became nO-Ring®: a multi-part case engineered to achieve direct mechanical sealing through the combination of unique geometry, extreme surface flatness and exceptional manufacturing precision. Rather than relying on rubber, it seals the case, metal against sapphire crystal, through precisely defined geometries and tolerances held to the finest margins. The solution was worked out over three years of calculations, prototyping and repeated physical testing, resulting in a water resistance of 300 metres with no gasket anywhere in the case.

The nO-Ring® technology is not one feature among many, it is the engineering innovation the brand was built on. Christophe Musy is an engineer first, and to an engineer, a component that degrades on a schedule is not a solution, it is a postponement. Developing the nO-Ring® was a genuine break from convention. For the founders, it was the answer they could not stop looking for.

The MU05 nO-Ring Origin pays tribute to the genesis of the brand’s nO-Ring® technology by returning to where every innovation begins: The first idea. This watch preserves the moment just before the idea became real, and hands it over to twenty-six people to keep.

Long before nO-Ring® became a patent, it existed as pages of handwritten calculations. Christophe worked the problem by hand, the way engineers have always worked, sketching out the geometry and tolerances that would decide whether metal alone could hold back the sea. Those pages survived, and the brand kept them.

For ten years, those pages stayed in the notebook of the brand’s co-founder, private working documents never meant for anyone else’s eyes. For the first time, Mauron Musy is sharing them. Today they leave the notebook and become part of the watch itself.

Appearing on the dial of each MU05 nO-Ring Origin is an evocative fragment of those original development notes, on a sandblasted black plate visible through the open-worked architecture. The brand has not redrawn or cleaned up the notes. They appear as they were: sometimes unresolved, incomplete, but with their purpose intact. Each owner can follow a different line of reasoning running to the edge of the dial, a sequence interrupted mid-thought by the shape of the plate itself. The notes are not meant to be read. They are meant to evoke the presence of the person who wrote them. This is Christophe’s train of thought, caught mid-stride as he worked toward something that did not yet exist.

Mauron Musy drew thirteen dial designs from those pages and set them within the frame of its MU05 model, the two versions each offering a collector a unique experience. No two watches carry the same fragment of calculations, and the two editions of thirteen will not be reproduced. The strap continues the thought, laser-engraved with the same handwriting, so that the reasoning runs off the dial and carries on around the wrist.

“The ideas always come at night, always, then evolving the next day into another idea, a more interesting and feasible one.” — Christophe Musy

Mauron Musy began in 2013 with two people, and two kinds of expertise that fit together. Christophe Musy and Eric Mauron founded Mauron Musy together, on one straightforward conviction: that real independence means deciding everything themselves, from the first sketch to the finished calibre. That conviction is precisely what made nO-Ring® possible.

Christophe brought an engineer’s inventive thinking and Eric brought the means to realise it. He was already running his father’s precision-mechanics workshop, producing for some of the major names in the watch industry. He knew how a case is actually made, how the machines behave, what is technically possible, and, most valuable of all, how to push those boundaries further. The brand grew from those complementary strengths: Christophe’s instinct to question, and Eric’s ability to turn those questions into something real.

“For me, independence is when you can control everything in the watch — the design, the conception, the idea, but with an innovative approach. I do not want to make compromises on design within a group. Independence means the freedom to pursue my dreams.” — Christophe Musy

The method behind the technology runs the manufacture to this day. An idea might arrive at night, and in the morning gets argued over with the watchmakers and rebuilt into something more feasible and often more interesting than the thing first imagined. This is patient, iterative, occasionally frustrating work, and the pages on these dials are what it actually looks like.

“For me, there are no limits. If we can dream of something, we have to find a way to make it real.” — Christophe Musy

Ten years on, nO-Ring® holds 300 metres without a single rubber gasket and asks for no specific maintenance to keep doing it. The dream, in this instance, found its solution — and it is still holding.

At the heart of the MU05 is a movement of particular significance to the brand. The MM01-SK was the first calibre developed exclusively for Mauron Musy. It has been designed, manufactured, and assembled in Switzerland, a decisive step for a young independent manufacture. The MM01-SK is the brand’s own movement, built on its own terms.

It is skeletonised by intention, opening up the architecture to reveal the components that actually give the watch life – the escapement, the barrel, the hour and minute pinions – while keeping the dial genuinely readable. Both sides of the MM01-SK are open to view through sapphire, making the movement as much a part of the MU05 nO-Ring Origin as the dial.

Mauron Musy is releasing the MU05 nO-Ring Origin in two executions of thirteen pieces each. Thirteen is the brand’s number, and the reason goes beyond superstition. It was founded in 2013 with the two letters M, for Mauron and Musy, the thirteenth letter of the alphabet. Thirteen has always been the number attached to breaking codes and defying convention, befitting of a brand that has never chosen the obvious path. It chose its own instead.

The first version to be unveiled, the MU05-111, features a Grade 5 titanium case with alternating satin-brushed and polished finishes, the contrast as deliberate as the lines of a technical drawing. Its open-worked dial carries contrasting red-gold-toned details and is individually numbered, with skeletonised, lumed sword hands and a small-seconds display at 9 o’clock.

A second execution, the MU05-112, completes the series with a further thirteen pieces. Built around the same dial concept, calibre and philosophy, it distinguishes itself through its colours and finishing. The brand will leave that second execution under wraps for a little longer.

Across both executions, each watch carries a unique printed section of Christophe’s handwritten notes and calculations on a dark, sandblasted ground, framed by the architecture of the MU05 dial.

Everything beneath the dial is the MU05 the brand’s collectors already know, reimagined as a tribute to the genesis of the nO-Ring® technology and this year’s milestone. The 44 mm four-segment titanium case is built from 29 components, the brand’s skeletonised MM01-SK calibre open to view through sapphire on both sides, and nO-Ring® sealing to 300 metres.

Each watch is delivered with an artwork the brand commissioned for this anniversary alone, produced for this series and no other. Mauron Musy would rather it were discovered than described. It stays with the watch, and with whoever owns it.
