Schwarz Etienne 1902 Petite Seconde Heure Doree - an expression of creative independence

Schwarz Etienne brings its watchmaking heritage to life through the 1902 collection, an expression of independence that enables creative freedom, built on in-house expertise in movement development and design.

T

he 1902 Petite Seconde Heure Doree introduces a new interpretation, inspired by that distinctive moment when the light grows warmer and brings surfaces into relief before day gives way to night. Set against deep black tones, 4N PVD gold-toned accents catch the light and bring a subtle warmth, highlighting the volumes, textures and architecture of the watch. Limited to just eight pieces, it combines a Grade 5 titanium case with a deep-black multi-layer DLC coating, a dial with contrasting finishes and the ASE 300.00 automatic micro-rotor calibre, entirely conceived, developed and assembled in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Heure Dorée expresses a distinctive balance between shadow and light, intensity and warmth, while placing the movement at the heart of the composition.

The 1902 Petite Seconde Heure Doree explores an aesthetic in which black becomes a language in its own right. A subtle construction combining a silky grained centre with a black opaline upper plate lends the dial a greater sense of depth, while the light reveals its contrasting textures, recalling the final light of the day. At 6 o’clock, the small seconds display brings balance and structure to the dial. The Schwarz Etienne logo, presented as a polished 4N PVD gold-toned appliqué, adds a controlled touch of light and reflects expertise developed within the Manufacture.

The applied indexes and lancine-style hands in 4N PVD gold tone stand out from the black dial, accentuating the volumes and creating a refined, luminous contrast. Their warm tone provides a restrained counterpoint to the black, recalling the golden light that intensifies as the day draws to a close. The hands combine sandblasted and polished surfaces, creating subtle variations in the way they catch the light while ensuring optimal legibility. The minute track and small seconds track, executed in the same gold-toned palette, extend this visual balance and reinforce the overall coherence of the watch. The contrast between the intensity of the black and the warmth of the gold-toned details expresses the understated refinement that defines the aesthetic identity of the 1902 collection.

For the first time within the 1902 collection, Schwarz Etienne combines Grade 5 titanium with a deep-black multi-layer DLC coating. This deliberately limited expression reflects the freedom of an independent Manufacture to explore new creative directions while preserving the intrinsic qualities of the material: lightness, resistance and comfort on the wrist.

Measuring 39 mm in diameter, the case maintains the balanced proportions that define the collection. The bezel, here enhanced by a circular satin finish, heightens the contrast with the black dial and echoes the satin-finished lugs, whose carefully shaped downward curve follows the natural line of the wrist. The interplay between satin-finished and polished surfaces allows the light to shift subtly with every movement of the wrist, highlighting the construction of the case and reinforcing its architectural character. Engraved with the Schwarz Etienne logo, the DLC titanium crown completes this balance between functionality, ergonomics and aesthetic expression.

At Schwarz Etienne, every creation begins with a culture of movement making. The 1902 Petite Seconde Heure Doree is no exception: its ASE 300.00 automatic micro-rotor calibre reflects the Manufacture’s integrated expertise, from conception through to final assembly.

Visible through the transparent caseback, the movement reveals a contemporary architecture composed of six slender bridges, with finishes developed specifically for this edition. For the first time within the 1902 collection, the movement is presented in anthracite tones, extending the depth and character of the black dial. In contrast, the micro-rotor features an exclusive 4N gold-toned finish reserved for this series, echoing the indexes and hands on the dial. This gold-toned element creates a striking point of brilliance within the movement’s darker architecture.

A sandblasted and rhodium-plated mainplate, polished bevels, bridges decorated with concentric circular Geneva stripes, and a sandblasted and satin-finished micro-rotor enhanced with a chevron motif inspired by the natural surroundings of the Manufacture: every detail contributes to the distinctive identity of this limited edition. The ratchet wheel, decorated with a hand-polished drop and engraved “Limited Edition of 8 Pieces”, with the inscription hand-filled in matt black lacquer, further underscores the exclusive nature of the piece. With its 86-hour power reserve, the ASE 300.00 calibre brings together mechanical architecture, traditional finishing and aesthetic expression within one coherent language.

The 1902 Petite Seconde Heure Doree embodies the creative freedom that only a fully integrated independent Manufacture can truly claim. By exploring the contrast between the depth of black and the warmth of 4N PVD gold tones, Schwarz Etienne opens up new creative territory while maintaining the dialogue between movement, design and savoir-faire that has shaped its identity since 1902. Built from the inside out, this limited edition of eight pieces expresses a considered approach to Haute Horlogerie, where every decision originates in the mechanics. True to the moment from which it takes its name, the 1902 Petite Seconde Heure Doree plays on the subtle transition between light and shadow, while the depth of its materials, the precision of its proportions and the architecture of its Manufacture calibre come together in a balanced composition, faithful to the movement-driven culture that defines Schwarz Etienne.

The 1902 PPetite Seconde Heure Doree is presented on a black Cordura strap with rubber lining, paired with a Grade 5 titanium pin buckle featuring a multi-layer DLC coating, chosen for its lightness, comfort on the wrist and high resistance to corrosion and scratches.
