Armin Strom Mirrored Force Resonance Zeitgeist 1665 3N: as good as gold

Yellow gold changes the character of a movement. On the Mirrored Force Resonance Zeitgeist 1665 3N, the mainplate and bridges are coloured in 3N yellow gold, bringing a more classical character to its contemporary architecture.

S

et against a black vernis laqué polidial, the gold comes into sharper focus, while the deep black accentuates the movement’s architecture and intricate construction.

Heat-blued stainless steel hands, manufactured and finished by Armin Strom, add another distinctly traditional watchmaking element. A 43 mm stainless steel case and dark grey Alcantara strap complete the composition around the yellow gold movement. The idea behind the Zeitgeist is simple: to imagine what a resonance wristwatch might have looked like centuries ago – if watchmakers had known then what we know now.

The in-house calibre ARF21 builds on an idea first explored in 1665, when Christiaan Huygens observed the synchronisation of two pendulum clocks. Two independent regulating systems transmit their vibrations through Armin Strom’s patented resonance clutch, allowing the balance wheels to synchronise through the physical phenomenon of resonance. Unlike historical attempts, the system is engineered to maintain that synchronisation on the wrist, improving chronometric stability in real-world conditions.

The calibre operates at 3.5 Hz (25,200 vph) and provides an 80-hour power reserve from two independent barrels. A twin-seconds flyback mechanism allows both seconds hands to be reset simultaneously, bringing a functional dimension to the visual symmetry of the two regulating organs.

Black sets the stage. Yellow gold puts the hand-finishing in the spotlight. The 3N-coloured mainplate and bridges are given a matt finish, creating a restrained backdrop for the hand-bevelled and polished edges and black-polished screws. Perlage and circular graining add further layers of traditional hand-finishing. And the same attention goes where the eye cannot: at Armin Strom, even the components you rarely see are finished by hand.

The skeletonised mainplate opens up the architecture around the resonance mechanism, making it appear almost suspended within the movement. Traditional finishing techniques frame the mechanics without distracting from them. And because finishing means little without precision, every Armin Strom watch is assembled twice – once to make it work, and once to make sure it works exactly as it should.

Limited to 25 pieces worldwide, each case back is individually engraved “1 out of 25”.
