CHOPARD PARTICIPATES AT “IMD-LOMBARD ODIER DARIER HENTSCH DISTINGUISHED FAMILY BUSINESS AWARD 2004”

October 2004

For the 5th year running, Chopard crafts the “IMD-Lombard Odier Darier Hentsch Distinguished Family Business Award 2004”.
This prestigious accolade, awarded by the IMD management institute during the 15th edition of the FBN “Family Business Network”, honours the “best practice” displayed in top-flight family businesses.
The Trophy, awarded during the gala evening held on September 10th at Copenhagen, symbolises the values of tradition, work and family. It is a tree held between two Plexiglas plates fixed in a rock crystal base, presented in an elegant pear wood case.
Through its roots firmly planted in the ground and its branches reaching towards the sky, the tree symbolises stability, the link between past and future and the continuity of generations. It thus provides a powerful metaphor of the family business spirit, which draws its strengths from its tradition in order to move towards the future.
This year, the laureate is the Barilla Group, the largest Italian food manufacturer and the world market leader for pasta products. The Group was founded by the Barilla family in 1877 as a bread and pasta shop in Parma (Italy). Since then, the Barilla family has created an empire in both categories. In 1910, Pietro Barilla, together with his sons Riccardo and Gualtiero, founded the first pasta factory, with 80 workers. Today the group has about 25,000 employees, operates directly in 23 countries and exports its products to over 100 countries.

The Chopard company, owned by the Scheufele family – father, mother, son and daughter – can also trace its history back several generations. This dynasty of jeweller-watchmakers has infused tremendous dynamism into Chopard, placing the company right up among the great names in the luxury business. Chopard currently employs 1,250 dedicated staff operating the 3 production sites and 10 distribution subsidiaries between New York and Singapore. 77 boutiques perfectly reflect the brand philosophy and it’s strong international presence. Chopard and the Scheufele family continues to build on key values such as tradition and quality, but particularly on innovation, creativity and flexibility, which are all crucial factors within the current economic climate.
