Sotheby's auction to span 300 years

October 2005

Geneva. Sotheby's upcoming “Important Watches and Wristwatches” auction, slated for November 15 in Geneva, will feature timepieces dating as far back as the end of the 17th century.

The pocket watch and wristwatch sale, ranging from the modern to the antique, was organized by head of Sotheby's Geneva watch department Alexander Barter. Important lots include a Patek Philippe wristwatch dubbed the “Celestial,” featuring a highly regarded complication valued between $140,000 and $170,000.

Dating back to the end of the 17th century, another unique lot is a gold and polychrome enamel pocket watch featuring images of the Virgin and child with Joseph on one side of the case, and Hercules and Omphale rendered on the other. On the more modern side, a limited-edition IWC watch issued in 1993 to celebrate the brand's 125th anniversary—one of only 125 worldwide and considered one of the most mechanically complicated wristwatches ever made—will also come under the hammer.
