Alinghi: One second for the victory

July 2007

In 2003, Alinghi went down in history by winning the America’s Cup and thereby becoming the first European team to have achieved this feat. On July 3rd 2007, after four years of intensive preparation and unremitting work, the Swiss Defender reiterated the feat of beating the Challenger Emirates Team New Zealand, by 5 races to 2.

Having accompanied Alinghi since the start of this wonderful adventure, the Audemars Piguet watch Manufacture is particularly proud to support and indeed to be part of this winning team. Brand CEO Georges-Henri Meylan was in Valencia to follow the competitions, like many other fervent supporters who had travelled there to experience the action live: “We witnessed some incredible match races between Alinghi and the Challenger. The level of the competition was exceptional and made even more fascinating watching than in Auckland in 2003. The peak of intensity was reached in the last regatta, when Alinghi crossed the finishing line just one second ahead of Emirates Team New Zealand. Time seemed to stand still and it took us a few seconds to realise we had won. These moments are truly magic and will remain with us forever!”

Showered with confetti and standing before crowd of enthusiastic spectators, Ernesto Bertarelli and the entire team lifted the famous silver trophy with great feeling, before joining all those close to the team for some well-deserved festivities.

For its triumphant return to Switzerland on the entire Alinghi team was on hand to pay tribute to its supporters. Over 7,000 people applauded the winners and saluted the performance achieved. The all-night party was enlivened by the music of the singer Zucchero.
