The watch of 2002-2003

February 2003

Contrary to a number of other members of our profession, Europa Star has not given in to the temptation of offering awards and prizes for Watches of the Year. There are already a lot in the arena and our 'universal' vocation leads us to prefer democratic cohabitation over choosing the 'best of breed'.

Nonetheless, if we were so inclined to advance a particular watch, it would be the Royal Oak Concept by Audemars Piguet. Why? Because this watch is opening roads to the future. Because it offers a demonstration of a fertile continuity between the past and what lies ahead. Because it proves that the mechanical watch can still innovate. Because it is bold and courageous. Because it is consistent and its new form is the exact reflection of its new functions. Another reason we would choose this watch is that it is an act of faith in the future by a brand determined to conserve its independence. Hats off to Audemars Piguet.
