The “Piaget 1967”: the re-issue of a timeless classic carries off the design prize at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève 2002

The Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève has awarded its top design prize, the Prix du design, to Piaget's classic “Piaget 1967” watch.

Organised by the City of Geneva, the birthplace and hub of precision watch-making, the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève was established in 2001 by the Swiss newspaper La Tribune de Genève. The event's second edition was held on 28 November 2002 at Geneva's Grand ThÉâtre.

A jury of 10 leading personalities, including the celebrated architect Mario Botta, chose the Piaget 1967 from among 250 models deemed representative of the style trends of their era from the world's most prestigious watch-making houses.

The Piaget 1967: capturing the essence of style
This year's award recognises Piaget in a category that has long been a point of pride for the company: design. Back in the 1950s, Piaget pioneered new creative paths in watch design by developing the world's first ultra-thin movement. Since then, the company's success has been inextricably linked to the power of style and design.

A harmonious marriage of classicism and audacity, the Piaget 1967 represents an excellent example of Piaget's aesthetic prowess. Created in 1967, as its name would suggest, the re-issued model nonetheless retains a thoroughly contemporary look.

The winner of this year's Prix du design is a man's watch in white gold featuring styling that incorporates strong design elements. The clous de Paris motif on either side of the case serves to highlight and enhance the refined beauty of the dial, while the unexpectedly large silver numerals set against a black satin background sound a strong note of originality.

The Piaget 1967 features an ultra-thin 430 P movement - one of the flagships of Piaget's watch-making expertise - with a depth of a mere 2.1 mm. This ultra-thin movement has freed Piaget's designers to concentrate their efforts on creating watches of exquisite elegance and refinement.
