A new take on the ultimate aviation chronograph, this watch sports an all-black fuselage, square counters and a super-rugged strap. Quite the statement for a watch model that’s over thirty years old.

The Chronomat is the flagship of the Breitling watch collection. It’s been around for over three decades now, and it’s been a perfect example of a masculine and technical look over the years.

So Breitling had some serious work to do when it decided to release a new edition of its iconic timepiece. After all, it’s no simple matter reinventing a classic. But reinvent it they did, and the new Chronomat 44 Blacksteel doesn’t disappoint.

Chronomat fans will notice the difference right away: Breiting has decided to give its new chronograph square counters this time around. Definitely making a bold statement, going for square rather than round counters, adds even more masculinity to the already bold design of the watch.

As its name suggests, the Chronomat steel case can be distinguished by its high-resistance carbon-based black treatment. It sports a unidirectional rotating bezel with black rubber-inlaid numerals and a large luminescent dot for counting down flight or dive times. The equally black dial stands out thanks to its three square counters and its red accents reminiscent of instrument panels. It is complemented perfectly by the military-style anthracite fabric dial, which also has a rubber lining guaranteeing excellent comfort.

Adding to the technical column, this model is powered by an exceptional engine, the Manufacture Breitling Caliber 01 selfwinding chronograph movement, which features a black oscillating weight visible through the transparent case back. Reliable and precise, the new Chronomat is chronometer-certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC).

The Chronomat 44 Blacksteel is a new take on a classic watch adored by some of the greatest airborne professionals. Its updated face adds to its strong look, although the new squared counters on the dial might divide opinion among the loyal fans of previous, more classic looking, Chronomat versions. But as far as I’m concerned, it’s good to show a bit more edge.
