Baume & Mercier Riviera: a design legacy

Created in 1973, the Riviera watch has returned to revive the spirit of a distinguished watchmaking era. It still features the distinctive bezel and streamlined steel watchcase. Rather than a revival, the new generation of this legendary watch strikes the chord of an authentic renewal.

S

ome watches stand the test of time. The Riviera is one of those. When it was launched in 1973, Baume & Mercier chose to present a powerful, unique, different and distinctive watch. Known for its twelve-sided bezel reflecting the twelve hours displayed on its dial, this unique watch left an impression as an icon of a nonchalant generation, inspired by the carefree lifestyle of the French Riviera.

Quartz movements, self-winding calibres, uniquely styled versions, oversized diameters, iron-pumping variations, and more conventional options... The Riviera has seen it all in its more than fifty years, and it still doesn’t look its age.

The 42-mm Baumatic Riviera is available with a smoky blue decorated sapphire dial on an integral steel bracelet, or with a smoky gray decorated sapphire dial on a supple black strap. The transparency of its translucent dial provides an opportunity to admire the moving gear trains of the calibre.

Today, the Riviera has returned to the stage in three size variations, each in steel: with diameters of 36 mm, 42 mm and 43 mm. It strikes a balance between its roots in avant-garde ‘70s design and the sport-minded classicism of today’s watches: a generously sized steel case, a dodecagonal bezel equipped with four screws, Swiss Made self-winding and quartz movements, and built-in interchangeable steel bracelet or softer strap.

Last but not least, a luxury version is equipped with the in-house Baumatic calibre with a five-day power reserve, a daily precision of -4 s / +6 s, and a magnetic resistance of 1500 Gauss.

Price: From CHF 1,650
