he Free-D caused an uproar when it was released, and for good reason. By challenging the way things are traditionally done in the watch world, by creating a watch made from 3D printed PA11, SevenFriday has managed to put forth a product that looks like it was shipped in from the future. The Free-D features a layered dial printed in PA11 encased in titanium. This case is held in place by an architectural, skeletal structure made out of that same polyamide. Visually, the Free-D’s influences are clear: space travel, technology and all things alien. Think Back to the Future meets Star Wars but more adult!
This futuristic vision not only influenced the Free-D’s aesthetic; it was also at the core of its design and construction. PA11 is a fully sustainable nylon that is lightweight but nonetheless durable and resilient. Thanks to this, despite the titanium case, the Free-D is comfortable and light without feeling flimsy or delicate. Additionally, the sustainability of the material used in the watch’s construction means SevenFriday can have a clear conscience regarding their environmental impact.
This series started with the Free-D 1. Closely related to a space shuttle or rocket ship, the first Free-D came in shades of grey and blue. With the success of the Free-D 1 and growing interest in this eye-catching but admittedly somewhat strange watch, SevenFriday saw the need for a pop of colour. Following the first release, they brought out a version in black, red and, most recently, the Free-D in green. These first three variations were, despite the use of colour, more muted and subtle and still incorporated plenty of the grey PA11.
However, this year SevenFriday is ushering in a new era of the Free-D evolution; the Free-D Coloured, a playful spin on the satellite series. This newest change to the satellite series involves brighter colours and a slightly altered construction. Four colour combinations with attention-grabbing hues were created with changes to the 3D-printed case wings and dial. From UFO greys to futuristic fuchsia, the Free-D’s evolution is a colourful one!
