or this new tribute to The Rolling Stones, the La Chaux-de-Fonds manufacture turned to Blue & Lonesome, the band’s 2016 album of blues covers and the only record of its kind in nearly 65 years of history. A singular album deserved a singular watch.
The new Rolling Stones Automaton – Blue & Lonesome is a unique piece housed in a 43mm white gold case. Entirely handcrafted, its dial serves as a showcase for the Maison’s artistic crafts. Around the off-centred time display, artisans have recreated the visual identity of the album through a combination of hand engraving, miniature sculpture and decorative finishing. The distinctive blue, red and white palette references both the blues roots celebrated by the album and the iconic Rolling Stones tongue logo.
At the centre lies a miniature stage scene populated by the band’s instruments, each individually sculpted from solid gold and finished by hand. The level of detail is remarkable: Keith Richards’ legendary “Micawber” Telecaster, Ron Wood’s guitar, Mick Jagger’s microphone and harmonica, and Charlie Watts’ minimalist drum kit are all rendered in miniature, some measuring only fractions of a millimetre.
Rooted in blues standards from the 1940s to the 1960s, Blue & Lonesome revisited musical heritage with authenticity and personality. Through a combination of engraving, miniature gold sculpture and mechanical animation, Jaquet Droz offers an equally personal reinterpretation.
