Breitling's Bentley motors

June 2003

Having been involved in the dashboard design of the Bentley Continental GT motor car, it was a logical step that Breitling would introduce a specially created chronograph. The result is an aesthetic timepiece that also incorporates some unique, innovative features.

The relationship between Bentley and Breitling began with the dashboard design and clock of the Bentley Continental GT, Bentley's most powerful car. This was followed by the two companies associating for the world-renowned Le Mans 24 Hours race.

The Bentley Motors timepiece is a remarkable chronograph dedicated to this association. The watch mirrors certain of the typical features of the Bentley such as the knurled finish on the bezel and although it is unmistakably a Breitling chronograph, there are several innovations that give it a unique quality.

Breitling's largest
The watchcase measures in at 48.7 millimeters, Breitling's largest, and because of its hollowed recess it enables the new Speed bracelet to swivel freely on its axis thus ensuring a perfect fit on any wrist.

The mechanism is called the '30 seconds chronograph' because the centre seconds sweep hand makes a 360° revolution every 30 seconds as opposed to the norm of 60 seconds. This highly original configuration offers a particularly precise reading of the fractions of a second, in this case 1/8ths. Driven by the new self-winding 38-jewel Calibre 25 movement developed in the Breitling workshops, it is an officially certified chronometer.

Exclusive features
Another exclusive feature is the variable tachometer. Used in conjunction with the chronograph, average speed measurement can

be read, whatever the time elapsed, the distance covered or the speed attained. Similar in concept to the slide rule, the variable tachometer is activated by rotating the notched exterior bezel, which drives a pinion and axle acting on the interior bezel. This mechanical system ensures that there is no interference with water-resistance parameters.

The other features are 30-second, 15-minute and 6-hour totalizers, a calendar between 4 and 5 o'clock, a screw-lock crown bearing Bentley's B logo, a cambered sapphire crystal - glareproofed on both sides - and a choice of four different coloured dials. The chronograph is water-resistant to 100 metres and is available with either a calfskin, crocodile or buffalo leather strap or the new Speed bracelet.

The Bentley Motors is available in either stainless steel or 18 carat yellow gold, with a limited series of 50 pieces in 18 carat white gold.
