The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust Rolesor is probably the world’s most easily recognized watch. It has become the symbol of symbols, the watch that signifies status or achievement for the wearer. On the other hand, it can also mean, quite simply, that one has impeccable taste since not only is it a handsome watch, but also it is precise, shows the date, has an automatic movement, is a Swiss Chronometer and is well and truly water-resistant (100 metres).
The Rolex Datejust first appeared in 1945 and has been in constant evolution ever since, nevertheless, it has managed to remain constantly desirable and a permanent best-seller because of its innovatory technical improvements and aesthetic progress.







The Shock of the New?
Today, the timepiece takes on a more youthful and refreshing appearance and yet remains in keeping with the established Rolex image. Softer lines dominate the 18 carat gold and stainless steel case (as always cut from a single block of metal) along with extended horns, and a choice of either a domed or fluted bezel. The 18 carat gold and stainless steel bracelets (the Jubilee and Oyster versions) have also been re-designed with an invisible clasp and enhance the new styling of the case.
There is also a fine selection of highly contrasting dials with larger indices and numerals, which, combined with the slightly bigger hands, make the ensemble much easier to read. As always, the ‘Cyclops’ magnifier at 3 o’clock offers a clear and enlarged view of the date. Rolex has also conducted extensive research into finding the ideal balance between the case and the bracelet and the resulting precise ergonomics of them ensures perfect wearability.
Times change, yet despite the re-interpretation of this classic timepiece and the added youthfulness of the accompanying visuals, the new generation of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust Rolesor Rolex remains … well, instantly recognisable and the brand’s benchmark.
