Rare view of historical Vulcain watches at L'Heure Asch

May 2006

The Geneva watch shop, L'Heure Asch is holding an exhibition of exceptional watches produced by Vulcain (founded 1858). The retrospective, staged by watchmaker, Denis Asch, is open until May 6.

“I am particularly grateful to Bernard Fleury for entrusting to me this unique collection of period and contemporary timepieces,†said Denis Asch. Fellow retailer, Bernard Fleury also displays the first consignment of Vulcain’s newest models, presented at BaselWorld last month.

The two watch enthusiasts had the idea of holding the exhibition only recently. In a matter of weeks it opened in the heart of Calvin’s city.

Around 50 unusual watches, including a dozen unique pieces, represent Vulcain’s historical production from 1889 to 1950. They include:

1889Hunting-cased gold minute-repeater in enamel miniature and pearls made for the 1889 Universal Exhibition in Paris. Signed Maurice Ditisheim, founder of Vulcain.

1900Gold and enamel sautoir watch in its original leather presentation case.

1912Pocket chronometer with chronograph.

1920Vulcain “Grand Prix†lady’s watch in white gold, set with six diamonds.

1925Marine chronometer.

1928Art Deco rectangular “Curvex†watch in gold.

1940Single-button chronograph in steel.

1947The first Vulcain “Cricket†wristwatch alarm in pink gold.

1950Full calendar watch with moon phases, in steel.

Among the contemporary watches are some of Vulcain’s showpiece models launched between 2003 and 2005:

The white-gold Concorde watches with cloisonné enamel dials marking a fabulous chapter in civil aviation. Produced in a limited series of 25.

A “Vintage 1928†watch inspired by a period piece.

The “Aviator†series of dual-time and elapsed-time watches.

The “Tourbillon Impérial Gong†, combining an alarm on cathedral gongs with a tourbillon.

The 2006 models are also on view for the first time since they were launched at Basel:

The “Golden Voice†with a discrete vibrating alarm opens a new chapter of sound in the development of the legendary Vulcain caliber. Two models: round and square.

The “Vulcanographe†, a self-winding column-wheel chronograph with large date and a second 24-hour time zone.

L’Heure Asch has, over the years, become the unavoidable meeting place for those in quest of beautiful mechanisms.
