This is not your typical dress watch. The special edition 18k rose gold model depicts the night sky on an deep blue dial, surrounded by a halo of 84 diamonds.

Parmigiani Fleurier has just added a new special edition model to its Tonda collection inspired by the celestial bodies of the night sky, and they’ve called it the 1950 Set Galaxy.

It’s fitting that the launch of the new watch coincided with a supermoon – when the moon appears larger because its orbit is closer to our planet. Unfortunately, many of us missed it given the cloudy autumn weather, but that’s where the Galaxy comes in.

This isn’t a moon phase, but on this watch you can appreciate the beautiful night sky anytime you fancy. The dial design is apparently inspired by the night sky above Val-de-Travers, where the company is based. I’m not sure how different the night sky appears where you and I are, but nonetheless the end result here is quite beautiful.

The blue glass dial provides the perfect backdrop to the shimmering copper flakes that represent the stars in the night sky. And you can even take the watch out at night because the hands have been coated to allow for luminescence in the dark.

On the inside we have the 29-jewel PF702 automatic movement, which has enough power reserve to get you through two consecutive nights. The movement is decorated with the Côtes de Genève and has bevelled bridges, which can be appreciated through the sapphire crystal case back.

The 1950 family of watches are among the brand’s simplest and most elegant. Usually they are defined by a clean dial design and a slim case, and this is no different. It is packaged in a classic looking 39mm case in18k rose gold, which provides a nice contrast to the deep blue dial colour. Coming it at a thickness of only 8.65mm adds to the elegant feel of the watch.

While this isn’t necessarily a typical dress watch – after all it has a halo of 84 diamonds on the bezel –it still looks the part without been overly flashy. To match the lux feel of the watch, it has been paired with a Hermès alligator leather strap in indigo blue.

The 1950 Set Galaxy comes in at a price of $23,900 - which is not at all insignificant - but admittedly the watch is very finely finished.
