rt in Time is based on a unique concept in watchmaking: bringing together niche watch houses on the basis of their common values rather than based on watch types, ranges, or similar styles. The artisans in question all share the same founding inspiration, characterized by independence, creativity, and exclusivity. Brought together for the first time under the banner of Art in time by their shared passion for craftsmanship, each of these watchmaking houses has its own well-defined identity, under the leadership of genuine entrepreneurs whose contemporary creations are exclusively produced in small quantities or as limited editions.
Typically, the singular nature of the pieces resides in a renewed approach to the way the time is displayed, the construction of the movement, or a ground-breaking design for the case, setting them apart from more conventional timepieces.
Throughout both his personal and professional career, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele has developed many initiatives closely related to the theme of time and the preservation of watchmaking heritage. One such example is the L.U.CEUM at the Chopard Manufacture in Fleurier. Its name draws inspiration from L.U.C. (Louis-Ulysse Chopard) and the Latin word lyceum, meaning a place of learning – the vocation of this venue for sharing watchmaking heritage with others. The rebirth of Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud in 2015, also under the personal leadership of Mr Scheufele, marked another milestone in the quest to restore watchmaking heritage to its rightful place. The timepieces created as a result of this dynamic embody Scheufele’s passion for the work of Ferdinand Berthoud – and his audacious ambition of bringing it back to life and giving it the visibility it deserves today.
In this exclusive space, only a curated selection of a few exceptional timepieces will be featured in a refined, minimalist setting. The brands’ names and logos are seamlessly integrated into a pared-back setting, free of any superfluous furnishings, allowing the timepieces to command full attention and ensuring nothing distracts the discerning eye of those who appreciate fine craftsmanship. This uniform presentation is the key to a visual harmony which allows each watch to emerge quite naturally. The showcases have been conceived to almost vanish from view, yielding the spotlight entirely to each watchmaking creation.
The vocation of Art in Time is to offer only quintessential watchmaking art. Such an undertaking is as ambitious as it is conceptual; ultimately, it will also include other art forms in relation to time. And to date, it is the only venue in the world to offer a selection of timepieces of this standard all in one place.
For his first international expansion, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele chose Tokyo as the home of Art in Time, guided by a long-standing and deeply personal affinity with Japan. Over many years, he has drawn constant inspiration from the country’s culture, refined aesthetics, and exceptional craftsmanship, returning regularly to engage with its creative spirit. This profound connection is also reflected in L.U.C Chopard creations, notably through the use of traditional Japanese Urushi lacquer dials in select timepieces—an expression of the Maison’s deep respect for Japan’s remarkable artisanal heritage. Tokyo, moreover, offers a uniquely discerning audience: Japanese people are renowned for their cultivated, eclectic tastes, their keen appreciation of craftsmanship, and the Japanese watch connoisseurs have deep knowledge of fine watchmaking. Establishing Art in Time in this context therefore emerges as a natural and meaningful extension of this enduring relationship, celebrating a shared devotion to excellence, artistry, and timeless savoir-faire.
