A fabulous collection of over 350 watches to be auctioned at Antiquorum’s November sale in Geneva.

November 2004

Antiquorum are pleased to announce their sale of Important Watches, Collectors’ Wristwatches and Clocks to be held on 13 -14 November, at the Hotel Noga Hilton in Geneva. Exceptional previews The experts of Antiquorum have decided that due to the exceptional variety and quality of this sale it shall be exhibited in Hong Kong October 31st-November 2nd at the newly inaugurated Antiquorum Showroom in Hong Kong Central and in Tokyo between November 4-5 at Toshi International, before being on final preview in the Geneva Showroom from November 11th. Highlights that span all areas of horology… Starting with the highly important and unique square 20K gold and enamel pre balance spring, single hand, pendant watch made by Paul Bizot, St. Germain, Paris in the middle of the 17th century. This square watch is unique in its shape at a time when watches were exclusively round, oval or octagonal. The impeccable and unusual type-of-Blois enamel (probably one of the early cases of enamel done in Paris, using the Blois technique of enamel painting, typical of the middle of the 17th century) flower pattern with its large single centred flower is different to flower patterns normally represented as bouquets. As only three other square watches from the same period are known of this kind, museums and very serious collectors shall be keen bidders. Further, and as a pleasure for the eye, there is “the Rose” a very fine enamelled and pearl-set quarter repeating rose form watch made by Piguet & Meylan, in ca 1818 for the Chinese market. This watch shall essentially be appreciated by the Chinese collectors if not to European museums. The estimate may be given upon request. The dispersion of the collection of Professor Joachim Mauss, offers a rare opportunity to acquire some fine and very interesting 19th century pocket watches of high quality. Among those an independent dead second, two-train Gaultier Père et Oltramare, Rochelle, made in ca. 1840 in 18K gold estimated at SFr 8,000-12,000 (U$ 6,000-10,000)(Euro 5,000-8,000). In the category of complicated watches there is an extremely fine and important 18K gold pocket chronometer, No. 61, with detent escapement and one-minute tourbillon regulator and Réaumur thermometer made by Frederic Houriet for Berthoud Frs, Paris ca. 1825, estimated at SFr. 350-450,000 (U$ 280,000-360,000)(Euro 225,000-290,000). Further, a very fine and rare silver pocket chronometer with a detent escapement and Réaumur thermometer estimated at SFr. 40,000-60,000 (U$30,000-50,000) ( Euro 26,000-40,000). For collectors of clocks there is an impressive and exceptional, ebonised and gilt brass, German astronomical monstrance clock in very good condition, with an interesting, early cross-beat escapement (a revolutionary system invented by Jakobo Burgi), signed “GA.BV” and made in ca. 1580 that will whet the interest of the northern European and US collectors as well as museums. Further on a highly interesting triple axis tourbillon carriage clock made by Richard Good & Sons, London in ca. 1971. Only two examples exist, this being a prototype which has been the focus of many articles and speeches. It was seen by Mr. Atwood of the Time Museum in London who absolutely wanted to acquire one alike and commissioned Good to make one. Which he did, but in the shape of a marine chronometer, for the museum. The piece on sale, the original clock, remained in the possession of Richard Good’s family until 2003. This piece will be of great interest to museums and serious collectors. Wristwatch collectors will have their heaven to chose from. Among brands always appreciated by collectors are of course Patek Philippe, Rolex and Vacheron Constantin. In this sale will be offered a rare Patek Phlippe Ref. 2499, third series, from 1969 and Patek Philippe Ref. 1518 with perpetual calendar from ca. 1944 with the original certificates and “Poinçon Genève”.
