Triumphant spring auction weekend for Antiquorum

June 2006

The world’s leading auction house in horology, Antiquorum, conducted a very satisfying auction weekend in Geneva. The total amount attained during the two days of sales was CHF 17,897,428 with 91% of lots sold.

The second day of sales, comprising two sessions of Important Collectors’Wristwatches, Pocket Watches & Clocks held at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel realized a total CHF 11,639,584, 120 % of value, on top of the CHF 6,257,844 attained for the second session of the Mondani Collection on Saturday.

If the Saturday sale was the triumph of wristwatches, the Sunday auction was certainly the victory of pocket- and decorative watches: The top lot of the sale being a magnificent pair of pistols made for the Chinese market in 1820 by Frères Rochat that sold to a private, overseas collector for CHF 1,690,500, followed by two superb pocket watches; lot 823 a very rare “Grande & Petite Sonnerie Clockwatch “ made by Lange & Söhne in 1905 that went way above its estimate to sell to a European private collector for CHF 760,900 beating a modern Patek Philippe “Ultra complicated pocket watch with 16 complications” made in 1999 that sold to a Far Eastern collector for CHF 598,500.

The Breguet brand was much appreciated in the Sunday sale, followed by Rolex and Patek Philippe. Lot 811 an extremely fine and important pocketwatch made by Breguet for Monsieur Castaneda almost doubled its estimate to sell for an astounding CHF 536,900.
Lot 801 a Rolex so-called “Pre-Daytona” in yellow gold tripled its estimate, and lot 802, a Rolex Daytona made in 1969 in Stainless Steel doubled the estimate. The Patek Phlippe Ref. 2499 First series, lot 832, sold for CHF 581,700 and the same reference “fourth series”, lot 807, made in 1984 for CHF 424,900.
