Antiquorum’s Spring auction in Geneva reaches astounding 18'392'786 CHF

Just one month after its huge success of Omegamania, Antiquorum’s Spring auction achieved the excellent result of 18'392'786 CHF (15’090’913 US$ – 11'162'766 ). 81 % of the 696 lots were sold, representing 150% in value. Strong international participation came from Asia, North America, Russia, Germany and Italy.
Almost 100’000 people were tracking the auction on the web.  Thanks to the Antiquorum online bidding system and Live Auctioneers 9% of the auction was sold to internet bidders worldwide.  The top lots of the sale were: the Patek Philippe “One of Only Two Known Ultra-Complicated Pocket Watches with Double Chronograph (lot 696) which fetched 928'900 CHF. It sold to an American collector after fierce bidding against a buyer from Taiwan.

“One of Only Two Known Ultra-Complicated Watches with Double Chronograph” Patek Philippe & Co., Geneva. Started in 1928, completed in 1931, sold on September 6, 1952. Exceptionally fine and highly important, extra large, ultra-complicated, astronomic, carillon minuterepeating with three hammers on three gongs, 18K yellow gold, keyless pocket watch with double chronograph, register, independent second register hand, perpetual calendar, moon phases and central alarm, one of only two ultra-complicated watches with double chronograph known to exist. Followed by the  “ Platinum Ref. 5033P” (lot 657) that was acquired by an Italian buyer for 828’100 CHF.

Lot 657
“Platinum Ref. 5033P-001, Gondolo” Patek Philippe, Genève. Made in a limited edition of 10 pieces with special dial, for the State of Qatar in 2002/2003. Extremely rare, fine and important, tonneau-shaped, Art Deco-style, minute-repeating, self-winding, platinum gentleman's wristwatch with annual calendar and a platinum Patek Philippe buckle. Accompanied by a mahogany fitted box, setting pin, the certificate of Origin and an additional platinum case back.

 Another American collector acquired the “ Ref. 2499, Yellow Gold 3rd Series” (lot 690) for 794,500 CHF and the “Platinum 5016” (lot 671) 772’100 CHF went to Taiwan. Some Audemars Piguet obtained brilliant results; for instance lot 507, an “Astronomic, yellow gold wristwatch with triple date” estimated 22’000 CHF went for 175,500 CHF and lot 506, an “18K yellow gold chronograph from 1943” estimated 50’000 CHF reached 96’760 CHF.

Omega watches maintained very strong values such as for lot 577 “Seamaster Ploprof 600M – 2nd generation” that sold for 17’700 CHF, as well as lot 598 “Dynamic” that doubled its estimate to sell for 22’420 CHF, clearly results of the Omegamania effect.

Cartier timepieces were much appreciated such as the lot 227, a “Pendulette Chevalet Kingfisher Feather Dial” that sold for 110’920 CHF, originally estimated at 20,000 CHF, and lot 228, a Paraléllogramme that went for 49’560 CH more than doubling its estimate.

Generally pocket watches by Breguet, Patek Philippe and other major brands were in very high demand. Lot 227 the “Grande  & Petite Sonnerie, Minute-Repeating Clockwatch” by Breguet sold for 187’000 CHF.
