The undefeated boxer was backed by the Swiss luxury watch brand to the tune of millions of dollars. Here are the numbers behind the record-breaking partnership.

How Hublot helped Mayweather to down McGregor

When it was all said and done, it was Floyd “Money” Mayweather that defeated UFC mega-star Conor McGregor. And let’s be clear, a lot was said before the fight – with each man taking shots at the other before the big night.

The much-hyped fight finally went down in Las Vegas, Nevada (where else) on Saturday, August 26, 2017, and it lived up to expectations. The pretender from UFC, McGregor held his own during the first half of the bout, going toe to toe with the undefeated 12 time boxing champion.

But by the end, it became clear that McGregor was out of his element, with the guile and experience of Mayweather winning out by technical knockout in the 10th round.

The result means that Floyd Mayweather will (allegedly) retire from the sport undefeated. For McGregor, he proved that he could stay on his feet with a boxing legend.

From that perspective, neither man had much to lose, and a lot to gain. And I do mean a lot.

Mayweather was true to his nickname “Money”, reportedly bringing home $100 million USD for the fight. McGregor, for his efforts, took in $30 million USD, nearly 10 times more than high previous high earning fight.

But that’s not all. With a kicker from revenue from ticket sales and TV distribution, each man can triple those figures when it’s all said and done.

Clearly, then, this fight was all about the money. It was a huge commercial opportunity, and many brands looked to capitalize on all the fanfare. Hublot was one of them.

The luxury Swiss watchmaker first partnered with Mayweather for the 2015 “Fight of the Century,” in which he defeated Manny Pacquiao. For this fight, Mayweather sported the brand’s name across the waistband of his boxing trunks as he entered the ring on the weekend. Reportedly, that sponsorship privilege cost the luxury brand upward of $3.5 million USD.

For that kind of money, brand CEO Ricardo Guadalupe was definitely excited:

“Once again, we have the great honor to partner with a true living legend, Floyd Mayweather, ‘The Best Ever,’ for what is sure to be the ‘Fight of the Millennium.’ … The collaboration continues the brand’s long history in support of the noble art of boxing and celebrating the Legend of the Legends.”

As for the victor himself, how can he be anything by happy with the partnership:

“I am proud of my relationship with Hublot. When I fight, I wear what I want to wear and Hublot has the main spot on my trunks. We have a major, powerful deal that you will see forever. It’s timeless.”

After Saturday’s show of tactical brilliance, Mayweather cemented his boxing legacy, hand in hand with the Hublot Big Bang Unico King Gold Jewelry. They are both imposing, bold, stylish, and as expected, cost a low of money.
