In a first for the Gentissima Oursin collection, this unique case embraces a dial carved from a fragment of the cosmos: a thin slice of blue or green meteorite. While it provides precise timekeeping accuracy via an automatic movement from Zenith, it’s a conversation piece, celebrated for its tactility and inspired design. “This is a sporty-chic watch,” says La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton Artistic Director Matthieu Hegi. “The sporty aspect is linked to the rubber and titanium, and the chic aspect is linked to the gold accents. It is for the discerning collector who loves design and beautiful things — someone who desires a watch that is different from what is found on the market and is highly identifiable.”

In 1994, Mr. Genta — the visionary designer behind some of the 20th century’s most iconic timepieces— was strolling along a beach in Corsica while there on vacation with his family. Stumbling upon a sea urchin – a creature of subtle grace yet surprising strength, embodied by its delicate form and protective spikes – he was inspired to design a timepiece that mirrored the creature’s unique shape. Drawing a round case with convex sides studded in tiny beads, his creative mind gave birth to the Oursin, French for “sea urchin”. A favourite model of Genta’s wife, Mrs. Evelyne Genta, the Oursin received a second lease in life when the gérald genta brand was relaunched with the support of La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton in 2023.

The new Gentissima Oursin 41 is not merely a larger iteration, it is an audacious declaration for the unconventional spirit. Fitted with a green or blue meteorite dial, its deep colors break with the often- demure structures found within traditional high-end watchmaking, its organic aesthetics speaking to the importance of unconventional thinking as well as Mr. Genta’s love of rare and precious materials. Furthermore, the natural crystalline structure of each thin slice of meteorite is unique, meaning that each watch is a rare, one-of-one creation. “Meteorite, while not stone, has a unique mineral origin as well as a beautiful and complex structure,” says Matthieu Hegi. “I wanted a natural material with its inherent quality, and I chose dark dials rather than light ones to give the watch a timeless and more sporty-chic character.”

Varying in hue depending upon the local light and viewing angle, each dial is uniquely dynamic and naturally beautiful yet remains highly legible. It features luminous, Super-LumiNova-filled 5-minute markers and gold hands, using a special Super-LumiNova with a subtle pink hue – a tribute to Mr. Genta’s favorite color. A specially designed sapphire crystal — curved on the outside and faceted in the signature octagonal shape within — protects the dial while increasing the dynamism and unicity of the overall design.

Echoing the sea urchin’s distinctive form, the case is meticulously set with individually hand-fitted white gold beads, creating an eye-catching and audacious look that instantly invites closer consideration.
